This Is Spinal Tap 2 Gets Big Filming Update & Cameos Tease From Director

Award-winning director Rob Reiner discusses intriguing cameos and the start of filming for his highly anticipated sequel to his iconic mockumentary.

  • The majority of the original cast and creatives return for the sequel This Is Spinal Tap 2, which is set 40 years after the events of the first film.
  • The character Ian Faith, played by the late Tony Hendra, will serve as the basis for a memorial in the sequel.
  • Strikes have caused delays in the film's release schedule, although the extra time could allow for additional sarcastic commentary on current events.

Director Rob Reiner provides an update on filming This Is Spinal Tap 2 and promises guest appearances. Returning cast members Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer will lead the band Spinal Tap on a farewell tour in the style of actual rock bands that have followed suit in the mockumentary. The events of This Is Spinal Tap 2 will occur forty years after the first film.

The planned This Is Spinal Tap 2 will start filming in February 2024, director Reiner announced during a conversation on the RHLSTP With Richard Herring podcast. The Princess Bride and When Harry Met Sally... are among the beloved films that the award-winning director has helmed. He also disclosed that real-life music icons Paul McCartney, Elton John, and Garth Brooks will make brief appearances in the film.

What Makes This Is Spinal Tap 2 Such A Unique Sequel

Not only does This Is Spinal Tap 2 take place forty years after the first film, but the majority of the original cast and creatives return for this iconic mockumentary. For the satirical film, it makes perfect sense to return the rock stars from the cult great film, whose careers were already in decline in 1984, in the present day.

The upcoming sequel will not include Tony Hendra, the English humorist and writer who portrayed Spinal Tap's band manager Ian Faith. Tony Hendra passed away in 2021. But it's also official that his persona will serve as inspiration for This Is Spinal Tap 2's plot. The member of Atomic Rooster band Ric Parnell, who portrayed drummer Mick Shrimpton in the first film, will also not be coming back because he passed away last year. The characters' ages and the amount of time that has passed between the films will undoubtedly be discussed in the sequel.
